"Sea Legs" by Todd Matson

You wanted to be top dog.

Now you’re in over your head.

You feel like you’re herding cats.

All those blind spots can be a bitch.

The missing filter between

your brain and mouth can’t be

helpful. Foot-in-mouth disease can

be quite a liability for an aspiring leader.

You feel dizzy, disoriented.

Looking for your sea legs, are you?

Vertigo happens when the brain is receiving

mixed messages from those tiny hairs in the inner ear.

The brain does the best it can to

interpret the mixed messages it’s receiving

and sends back mixed messages to those tiny hairs

as to one’s position vis-à-vis other objects in the environment.

Dear leader, people are

not objects. People are not cats.

People are people. People deserve to

be listened to, heard, understood, cared for.

People do not deserve to be

barked at like you bark at the door

you stub your toe on. If you want to find

your sea legs, start with your ears, not your mouth.
